About

I am an RIBA chartered architect based in Stroud, Gloucestershire, where I set up practice in 2009 after 12 years working in key roles in a number of respected London-based architectural offices.

I have experience in a wide range of building types including private residential projects, housing, art gallery and artists' studios, theatres, church and community use.

I offer a full architectural service, from Sketch Design, through Planning and Building Regulations, to Detailed Design and Contract Administration.

I am a registered Local Authority Building Control (LABC) Partner.

Approach

I work with my clients to achieve a unique and appropriate solution, one which is sensitive to place, inspired by brief, client and site, and rooted in reality and practicality.

At the heart of my approach is the use of three-dimensional sketches to explore a design with my clients, drawing out their ideas and vision for their building project and hopefully raising their ambition for its potential. I develop a strong visual sense of the scheme throughout all stages of the process, whether it is in the conceptual character at the outset or in parallel with the more conventional detailed construction drawings as the design is developed, and ultimately constructed.

Throughout this creative process I bring to bear my own experience, intuition, thoroughness and practical expertise to ensure a constant check against other sometimes conflicting factors; eg whole project costs, likely planning or building regulation constraints, programme and construction implications.

Sustainability

A concern for the environmental, social and economic aspects of sustainability is central to my practice.

Deciding on appropriate technologies for a project can be a daunting task, with impartial advice often hard to obtain. With a new building the choice of materials, orientation, and building form can all be developed at an early stage to maximise the environmental performance of the finished building. With existing structures however it is necessary to balance often conflicting factors eg aesthetic alterations, conservation constraints, existing materials and construction details, appropriate services and of course cost.

My task is to liaise with the client to achieve the optimum design and practical solution both in relation to environmental responsibility and my client's broader requirements and budget. I work with an experienced architectural technician with a passion for sustainable construction, and we ensure that the environmental approach to each project is developed through a balanced, holistic view of the client's needs.
